If you know anything about fairy lore, then you must think me a fairy, and Mopsy, my extremely hairy changeling child. For I did find her abandoned in the woods (a grassy lot on Elmwood Street in Portland, Maine), where her previous parents did leave her for her odd ways (got her as an Easter present for their kids, but didn’t bother fixing her or keeping her away from the male rabbit so they threw her out the back door before she had her babies).
Unfortunately Mopsy’s babies culd not be recovered, I tried my darndest, but I did get her in the have-a-heart trap. Which was unfortunate for her really because I had zero rabbit experience.
I always said I would never get an animal without first knowing exactly how to take care of it and having all the supplies. But this was an emergency so DAMN THE RULES.
Her only saving grace was that I brought her immediately to a vet yelling “HALP ME I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS THING”. The very nice vet lady set me straight then, and now this rabbit rules the house and has every need attended to, like all pets should.
Because her needs were also emergency at the point of the vet visit (I think I’d had her maybe 24 hours at this point and had been feeding her nothing but scraps of cabbage and carrots and she wouldn’t drink water from a bowl), she came with me after to all the other stores on the street. It was hot too so she came right in with me in her little cat carrier, everyone seeing her yelling “IS THAT A RABBIT?!?!”
You would think with the general public being so crazy about them, the species as a whole wouldn’t get treated like shit so consistently.
Now, I had zero rabbit moneys. Still don’t if I’m being honest. With no one renting that will allow rabbits, until I earn the down payment for my land, Mopsy and I are bumming it at my parent’s with one cat that we’ve defacto adopted, two dogs, another cat that is a complete asshole and would sit there and poke her all day if given the chance, and the occassional visit from Mopsy’s true love, a rottweiler named Gus. But that’s a story for another time. Thank you for staying with me through the tale~
